Re: McLea/MacLea from Glasgow to Massachusetts
Hi Donald,
All of the places mentioned in the Rothesay records I believe to be farm names or locations within the Island... which is why I'm looking for a good map of the island. I know where some of them are, just not all of them. If you look at the user gallery I uploaded, you'll see some of those names labeled, because Craig McClay Wilson identified some of them when he visited a few years ago. Mecknoch comes to mind.
So, I think they are all locations ON the island. When it was off the island, the writer in the records identified it as such "in the parish of XXXXX" usually.
I wonder about Hunter's Butt. I think it is derived from the same word as Bute itself, but I'm not sure.

Hi Jewel,
It's a great document, isn't it? It's one of those "foundational" documents for the Clan. Pretty much everything we know about the Clan in its historical form stems from this document. It's clearly not omniscient (the Lismore line is barely discussed) but provides a lot of information about the author's forebears. A lot of us are trying to tie into the Lindsaig line (that of the author), but haven't really been able to prove anything yet. It's a fascinating document!
The 1740 Will I posted elsewhere is of the father of the author of this document. I'll be posting his own will when I get a chance, along with his brother's.

Re: McLea/MacLea from Glasgow to Massachusetts
HI Kyle,
Regarding the Macleas that were neighbours of and connected to the Mackenzies mentioned in the Maclea history they like their Mackenzie friends almost certainly were not on the Jacobite side of the Rebellion. Those Mackenzies mentioned were one of the clans that were persuaded not to join up with the other clans supporting Bonnie Prince Charlie. I think Duncan Forbes may have had a hand in that. Had it not been for Forbes many more highland clans might have participated and Bonnie Prince Charlie might of had a considerably larger body of troops assembled at Culloden in April of 1745.
regards,
Donald

Thanks for looking, Donald. It seems likely their either moved en masse or one or more of them must have died.
Curious.

Re: McLea/MacLea from Glasgow to Massachusetts
Hi Kyle,
In regards what I said in one of my earlier posting above while the Seaforth Mackenzies and their Maclea tenants likely were with not Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, other Mackenzies it should be noted were. I believe for example there were some MacKenzies in our Appin Regiment so one has to be careful that this is not overlooked. The late Baron Alastair Livingstone's book "No Quarter Given" may identify the origins of the Mackenzie enlisted men in the Appin Regiment in 1745-1746.
regards,
Donald
