On the trail of Dr. David's brother John
Hi Cristel, THere is much confusion regarding Livingstone Manor, especially since it is now spelt Livingstone Manor and there were in the 1800's two Livingstone/Livingston families living in the town of Listowel. It was originally spelled Livingston and refers not to the home of Dr. Livingstone's brother John Livingstone (1811-1899) who was a Listowel merchant but was a mansion of another Livingston family that lived in Listowel who made their money in the Flax and Linseed business. The great grandson of John Livingstone, brother of Dr. Livingstone tells me that the family that lived in the old Livingston Mansion on Main Street were related to a James and John Livingston who are connected to this mansion and the one in Baden apparently. Interestingly Dr Henry Livingstone grandson of John Livingstone was a doctor to Becky Livingston one of last of the family live in the old Livingston mansion in Listowel. John's great grandson also told me that the assumption is often made that his ancestor lived in this old mansion and that there is Dr. Livingstone connection to this family. As far as he knows the two families are not related. Hope this helps. regards, Donald

As a footnote to this search for John Livingstone of Listowel, there is an excellent article on the Livingstone family that appeared in the Celtic Monthly Volume 2 No.6 March 1894 issue written by Reverend A. Maclean Sinclair of Belfast, PEI. The article was intitled "Highland Ancestors of Dr. David Livingstone African Traveler." The author provides the reader with a detailed study of the kin of Dr Livingston and mentions Dr. Livingstone's brother John Livingstone of Listowel whom I understand he corresponded with as part of his research. Reverend Sinclair was a regular contributor in the late 1800's and early 1900's with the Celtic Monthly. regards, Donald
