Hi Roberta,
Probably not an lowland Ayrshire family connection with those Livingstons that Atlantic Canada. Most of them came from the highland County of Argyll in the 1800's. This Livingston-McCartney family connection probably established in Nova Scotia.

Donald

Re: Nova Scotia/PEI Livingstone Research
HI Barry,
Great stuff. The lady from Clyde River must be connected to the family of Donald and Mary Livingston's son that purchased land from Lord Selkirk in the year 1806 at Lot 31. That was Donald Livingston Jr. Clyde River is located in Lot 31, QUeens County. Cornwall United Church would of had some former Presbyterians in its congregation though some Presbyterians in 1925 refused to merge with methodist congregations to form the United Church of Canada and remained in separate Presbyterian congregations. There would definitely be Presbyterian scots buried in United Church cemeteries particularly in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. All of my Presbyterian Scot and Methodist English and American kin in Canada joined the United Church of Canada in 1925. Clyde River seems to be also known as Dog River and was part of Selkirk's Lot 31.
We have been contacted by one Livingston who is a descendant of Allan and Janet of Nine Mile Creek but whom oddly doesnt seem to be related to the other Nine Mile Creek family Livingston of Donald and Mary Livingston. Still trying to figure that one out. The direct descendant of Donald and Mary Livingston of Nine Mile Creek appears to be somehow connected to my ancestor Miles Livingston and his family back in Morvern Parish, Scotland. I am certain the other Livingston descended from Allan and Janet Livingston of Nine Mile Creek Lot 65, Queens County will be interested that you found that Will if he has not seen it already.
regards,
Donald

Re: Nova Scotia/PEI Livingstone Research
Hi Sandy,
I realize there is a Boston Livingston family that are connected to a Duncan Livingston and Mary O'Connell but it is my understanding and that of historian and author Dr. James St. Clair who has spent over 50 yrs doing genealogy research of Cape Breton Livingston families has stated that Duncan Livingston b.1841 who married Mary McDonald in Pictou, Nova Scotia in the 1870's is the son of Old Kate and John Livingston Jr. of Mull River, Inverness. Duncan is recorded in the 1871 Census living with his brothers and sisters and widowed mother Catharine (Kate) in the 1871 Inverness County, Cape Breton Census and before left for Pictou. The Mining community that he worked for in Pictou County, Vale Colliery, only opened up in the early 1870's so that is probably why he left Mull RIver in the first place for Pictou County after 1871.For these reasons and the fact that there is a birth record stating that your grandfather John Hugh Livingston was born in 1874 at Vale Colliery, Pictou, Nova Scotia to Duncan Livingston and Mary McDonald I am convinced you connected to Duncan Livingston and Mary McDonald and not this Boston Livingston family of Duncan Livingston and Mary O'Connell. I realize that there is some confusion but if you have information that your grandfather was John Hugh Livingston born in 1874 in Pictou and your family lives or lived in Springhill, Nova Scotia and has some memory of mining then I think your connected to family line I am speaking of. Forget about the Boston Livingstons for the time being. It is just confusing the task at hand which is identify your Livingston family line in Nova Scotia. Lets keep it simple so no one is confused about your ancestral line. Hope this helps you to move forward.

This is how I understand this epilogue?
Mary was pregnant by Duncan ergo "shotgun marriage" I iterate, according to Barry. They left for Boston where Hugh was born. Duncan left Mary and Hugh and took-up with Mary Agnes O'Connell; who I believe was born in Halifax.

Re: Nova Scotia/PEI Livingstone Research
hi! as i mentioned in a previous pm my uncle Allan, son of John Hughie, grandson of Duncan and Mary Macdonald told me that John Hughie was orphaned at a young age. perhaps Duncan did die young. Mary ( Macdonald )Livingston died on march 11th, 1894 in Springhill. John Hughie would have been 20 yrs old. i know my father or aunts and uncles never knew Duncan.Canadian Livingstone wrote:Hi Mary Ann,
well the fact that Mary Ann is listed as a widow with her son in the Nova Scotia in the census of 1881 strongly suggests that her husband simply died sometime between 1874 and 1881. Also while we have easy access to detailed census records family historians in years past may not have had and years after the death of Duncan simply were ignorant of the fact that Duncan had died shortly after his marriage and another more fanciful story eventually surfaced explaining a young woman with a son and no husband shortly after her marriage. Duncan did indeed disappear from the family story but not of his own choice but through his early death and this some how turned into a mysterious disappearance story. It is not likely that the source of this tale had access to Mary's census information to offer an alternative explanation such as an early death.
