Hi Neil I think I understand and pretty much agree that we don't seem to know yet. I am also hopeful about DNA. At this stage, I have not seen the exact data Patrick Guiness mentioned. On the other hand from what I have read he only says that, one Donleavy family has the "Scots" type of R1b, like your family and many others. My DNA advice: if you are in a common haplotype, get as many markers as possible tested if you want to try to use it draw strong genealogical conclusions. I believed there are more than 60 markers now available if you go beyond Family Tree DNA. Obviously with some of them you won't get many immediate people to compare to, but every DNA test gives a piece of information which adds to a bigger picture which will build over time. Regards Andrew
