The Lorrha (Stowe) Missal

Written c. A.D. 792-803 in Latin, The Lorrha (Stowe) Missal is a Mass-book of the early Irish Church and named Stowe because it was once part of a collection of manuscripts in the library of the Duke of Buckingham. In 1883 it was purchased by the British Government and deposited in the Royal Irish Academy.

Of interest to Livingstone's, Macleas and anyone else with a connection to Lismore or St Moluag is the fact that the Lorrha Missal is generally reckoned to have been written about two hundred years after the death of St Moluag and he is included amongst the 48 Saints as Lua of Lismore. Amongst the others included are St Mary, the twelve apostles, St Patrick, St Brendan, St Comgall, Saint Finian and St Augustine. Lofty company indeed.

Saint Adomnan is not included. It is significant that in his Life of St Columba Adomnan makes no mention of St Moluag. Oh - did I forget? St Columba is mentioned in this Litany.

The Litany of Saints

O God come to my assistance.
